UPF is always stated alongside a number, which indicates how many UV rays hit the fabric before a single ray penetrates. A value of UPF 50 means that out of 50 rays, only one penetrates. If 1 out of 50 rays passes through, it corresponds to 2%, meaning the fabric blocks the remaining 98% of UV rays. Therefore, UPF 50 is often described as 98% protection.
Even when your child is wearing UV clothing, please remember to apply sunscreen to areas that are not covered. General sun safety advice still applies.
